On the UNIX name.

Just to be totally accurate, the Suns in the lab running Solaris are the only machines here that are actually running Unix. Unix should really only refer to the operating system developed at Bell Labs in the 1970s and its derivatives. The Linux (or GNU/Linux) machines are designed to be pretty much Unix like (but GNU's Not Unix). They are a reimplementation of many of the ideas and methods from Unix, but there are (often subtle) differences. Everything in this discussion was tested on GNU/Linux and may or may not work on Solaris.
